Penguins make excellent mascots. Just look at Linux. Even if you don't understand what that OS is, you still look at their little penguin and declare its cuteness. From movies to mascots, penguins can represent just about anything. So why can't they also represent a new online community similar to craigslist, but not nearly as creepy.

Qwixo.com features zipcode-specific searchability. There are several different categories, like sales, jobs and gigs. It's a nice idea, like an internet bulletin board.

You can use it to send out notes to everyone in your zipcode. Which means your little 4th of July party can expect more than just the neighbourhood to show up. Post your latest yard sale to attract real people, not those driving by too fast to read your bright pink sign taped to the lamppost.

Heh, I'm sure this will become quite a popular place for terrible garage bands to post their gigs. So think of it as a way to know what bands to avoid before you suffer their horrid music.

It just occurred to me that college kids will be able to use this instead of Facebook marketplace as well. Nice, another way to search endlessly for art supplies and apartments.

The only downside so far is that nobody has posted anything. It's too brand new to really find anything, even if you live in New York (I checked). However, that's clearly temporary and after a few weeks the site will be buzzing with new posts.

And it will always have that cute penguin.
